Most of the original recording session were archived by 16 inch during the year of 1945 to 1946. It had been owned by and stored at Horowitz home. Subsequently, Horowitz converted the original 16 inch records to 12 inch. Horowitz organized these 12 inch records within the album and kept on handy so that he could replay for himself and share with his friends and other pianists. It was remarked that item C was damaged and lost by Horowitz. Therefore, Cain Alder suggested him to save all of the backup and converted the original data to tapes by the mid-1970s. (Note 1) When I visited Cain Alder’s home, he replayed some of the collection for me. Obviously, Horowitz became more cautious in handling the original. Then he started to use the tapes (or LPs), when he replayed the recording for his friends, or for his private use. Alder published the paper in 1978 (Note 1) and complied the discography of 15 recitals from the total 22 recitals, excluding A,C,L,M,N,U,V. It was not a complete discography, yet remarked as the first discography of Horowitz private recordings, called “Yale Collection”. Alder wrote up the discography, when he was coping the backup tape.
Wanda and Horowitz had decided to donate Horowitz personal collection to Yale University in 1986, total of 218 discs (78 of 12 and 16 inch ), packaged in 164 boxes, along with other useful information (letters to/from business partners, photo, music scores, program, royalty and other business contract, etc). It was so called “Yale Collection”.
It was understandable and smart decision that these valuable discs were handed over to the custody of the public organization. Among many other options, why did Horowitz choose Yale University? Yale had the wonderful music library, yet it was not the only reason. In 1966 and 1968, Horowitz performed the piano recital in the auditorium in Yale University and participated in the meeting with students. In 1970, Horowitz received the honorable degree from Yale University and made another 2 recitals. I believe his long time mutual relationship with Yale was the reason of his decision. After Horowitz’s death, Wanda had further provided the additional information of Horowitz and her father, Toscanini. The complete index was archived on website of Yale University music library.
In 1992, Wanda allowed Thomas Frost to make the copy of the original discs of 15 recitals and convert to the tape, under the condition to promise the future public releases. It was the trigger of Yale collection commercial release, starting CD published from RCA/BMG(BMG 09026-62643-2, 09026-62644-2).
Yale University had owned the original disc, yet no legal right to proceed the public release without Wanda’s consent. Wanda hesitated to release some acrobatic show pieces, such as Balakirev Islamey and Susa=Horowitz “the Stars and Stripes Forever”. Islamey was soon available by commercial releases, while the stars and stripes forever has never been released in the public that Horowitz performed on March 28, 1945, just before the end of WWII.
Yale University made the back-up archives of A,L,M,N(Piano Concerto). A was released in France, 2009, while the origin of the tapes were unknown. Prior to the donation, N was archived on LP, released by Bruno Walter Society within the member’s circle. L and M was Brahms Piano Concerto No.2, corroborated with Bruno Walter. Brahms Piano Concerto No.2 with Toscanini was commercially released, while Walter version had never been released. There was a rumor by Yale college student who listened to either L or M, and commented that Walter version was much better than Toscanini version. (Note 6)
In 1998, Donald Manildi published the Yale Collection List (Note 5) in the magazine IPQ (International Piano Quarterly), summer 1998. It compiled all programs from 14 recitals in Carnegie Hall, corresponding to Yale 1~14 listed above.
Appendix IV.2 listed all program from Yale Collection in accordance with the recording date. Appendix IV.3 listed the complete discography of Yale Collection. It clearly defined which one was the released sessions or unreleased sessions. Compared to the HOROWITZ Website by Johansen (currently take over from Bernard Horowitz) and Alder’s discography, I found 2 errors in the recording date; misprint of “1946.4.8”, which should be “4.6”. Another misprint of “1949.2.1” should be “2.21”. The program list was incomplete, as missing some programs.
There was another recital, other than 14 recitals listed in IPQ paper. It was remarked within the booklet of the 41 CDs box set released by Sony in 2013. (Note 4). It was classified as Yale 15, as the part of Yale collection. CH (CD41) was defined as Yale Collection within the booklet. J. Samuels had transferred the original disc to tape recording. Therefore, it shall be considered as part of the donated collection. CH (CD41) was not complete as including only 3 pieces; Chopin Polonaise Op.26-1 and Liszt Consolation No.4 and 5.
Within the list above, 15 recitals could be cross referenced to Yale 1~15, along with the information of the number of piano pieces archived in CD-Box. In 1994, BMG had released CD of private recordings, which the program listing was summarized in Appendix III.9. The booklet within CD-Box stated that the recordings of 14 recitals were donated to Yale University. If Yale 15 was in deed “Yale Collection”, I wonder which one shall be excluded from Yale collection among Yale 1~14. Or it was simply because the booklet description had a misprint of “14 recitals”, instead, “15 recitals”?
For U and V, RCA also made the tape recordings by their own set of equipment and had released LP (and CD). It indicated that recitals of U and V were duplication by Recording service company of Carnegie Hall and RCA. I assumed that CH releases were not of RCA recording sessions, but of Carnegie Hall recording sessions. Horowitz relied on RCA recordings of U and V, thus he did not keep it at home. U and V were corresponding to CD8-9 and CD10-11 of CD Box collection, including all piano works. Similar to other Yale collection, John Samuels had converted the original disc to the tapes, but not donated to Yale University.

IV 2. Yale Collection Recording Date and Program
The table below is a list of Yale Collection Recording Date and Program, summarized by the chronologic order per recording date. It was compiled from the source information published by the magazine “IPQ” and the Horowitz Website. I noticed some inconsistency within the information of recording date. In such case, I referred to and relied on the information provided within the Carnegie Hall live Recordings that was released by SONY. For CD recordings, I listed CD number and track number.

IV. 3 Yale Collection Discography
This is the discography of Horowitz private recordings that were sourced and edited from 15 recitals held in Carnegie Hall. The series of recordings was called “Yale Collection”. When you see some repertories of piano compositions only with recording date, it means that these have not been officially released yet until today. Even although it was archived within the Yale Collection, the possibility of the future release is uncertain. It was simply because there were some technical issues in retrieving recording data, or data conversion to tapes, otherwise there were specific reason in relation to the data conditions or other consideration.
* Not included in the magazine “IPQ” in 1998, but listed in the Horowitz Website concertography.
** Not included in the magazine “IPQ” in 1998, but archived in Yale15, recital live held in April 24, 1950.
